Coconut oil for oral health

Here in the Hippie Dippy House, we said goodbye to fluoride toothpaste a long time ago. Despite what we’ve had shoved down our throats (quite literally) since we were small children, fluoride is not good for our teeth or any other parts of our bodies.

The United States is one of the only developed countries around the world to fluoridate its water. That’s because other countries recognize it for what it is – a highly toxic substance. In fact, our very own toothpaste tubes here in America warn to call Poison Control if the paste is swallowed.

Fluoride has no significant benefits, only risks. It’s an endocrine disruptor, which means it can have negative effects on our bones, pineal gland, thyroid, and many other things. It prevents the natural healing process of our teeth, and studies have shown that it even lowers the IQ scores of children.

So, why coconut oil? Coconut oil is known for its antibacterial and antiviral qualities. When used in the mouth, it can take care of bad breath, help promote the healing of decaying teeth, help prevent future cavities, whiten teeth, and strengthen gums.

Two of the most popular ways to use it for oral health are “oil pulling” and using it as toothpaste. The best coconut oil to use is the unrefined, cold pressed kind. It also smells and tastes like coconut, which is a plus.

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic technique where a spoonful of oil is swished around the mouth for fifteen to twenty minutes and then spit out. This process is thought to draw toxins out of the body and improve oral health.

Using coconut oil in place of regular toothpaste is just as simple. Keep a jar of it in your bathroom and use it just like any other toothpaste. If your house isn’t too hot, the oil will probably be in its solid form, which is good for helping it stick to your toothbrush. It’s a good idea to keep a spoon in the bathroom, that way you aren’t sticking your dirty toothbrush in the whole jar.

Everyone in the Hippie Dippy House has had decreased tooth sensitivity, whiter teeth, no cavities, and better breath since switching to coconut oil. Go forth and enjoy your sparkly, natural smile!
